Toronto, September 11, 2023 – �ֲ���ý Canada is devastated by the news of a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Morocco. As a picture of the damage unfolds, our thoughts are with children and their families.

With more than 2,400 deaths already reported and many more injured – it is critical that survivors are reached urgently, and that food, water and shelter are delivered without delay.

The powerful earthquake struck in the Atlas Mountain range on Saturday, September 8, with an aftershock 19 minutes later. The widespread devastation, particularly in rural areas, makes rescue efforts much harder, with roads and homes reduced to rubble and vital services destroyed.

“We join the international community in extending unwavering solidarity to the people of Morocco. We also extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. In times of crisis, children and girls are often the most vulnerable, bearing the brunt of the challenges and uncertainties that arise. All relief efforts must prioritize their needs,” says Lindsay Glassco, President and CEO of �ֲ���ý Canada.

“From experience in these terrible early days, basic needs must be met quickly,” adds Dr. Unni Krishnan, Global Humanitarian Director at �ֲ���ý.

“After an earthquake, many sleep outside for fear of recurrent tremors. It is critical to address the emotional needs of children along with other life-saving assistance. In the initial hours, search and rescue efforts must be the top priority, along with life-saving medical assistance, food, clean water, and sanitation,” Dr. Krishnan continued.
